A Dogman is employed to drive and direct a crane in operation on a building construction site. A Dogman performs the following duties:
- checks the loads to be moved (size, shape, weight and centre of gravity) to ensure they match the lifting capacity of cranes
- attaches lifting devices to hoisting equipment
- chooses slings and other grappling devices
- signals to crane or winch operators when load is not visible
- uses two-way radios to converse with crane or winch operators
- guides loads into position as they are lowered
- inspects chains, slings, ropes, cables, hooks and lifting gear for flaws and damage
A Dogman must be physically fit, with good hearing and vision.
